The Final Girls (2015)

The Final Girls is such an unexpected movie and an amazing concept. The closest thing I could compare it to is The Cabin in the Woods. Like in the latest, our characters find themselves within a movie (a parody of Friday the 13^th to be exact) and will try their best to survive it. The concept is exploited cleverly and there are a lot of mind-blowing scenes. Homages to the notorious slasher franchise and its rules of survival are everywhere and will delight fans of the franchise.

Yet, it is the characters who steal the show in this movie. By using the “movie within a movie” concept, The Final Girls has the freedom to use over-stereotyped characters alongside “normal” characters. This gives rise to tons of hilarious scenes and the first one hour of the movie made me laugh so hard. It gets a bit repetitive in the last third – and also way too sentimental for this type of movie – but that is pretty much the only drawback you’ll find in The Final Girls. The acting is excellent, and the movie shots, as well as the overall visuals, are outstanding. It is not often that directing is so good that it is noticeable, but here it is clearly the case!
