The Damned (2014) Review:
Victor García’s movies haven’t been really convincing so far (Hellraiser: Revelations, Mirrors 2) but this one brings some hope, mainly thanks to a greatly written scenario.
The story in itself is nothing different from your usual possession movie, but the movie does play around one cool concept: “if you kill the possessed, the demon immediately takes hold of your body”. For this reason, the characters constantly try to lock the possessed person without ever killing him/her. Of course, things keep going wrong, but at least in the different way than the usual possession movies.
Unfortunately, with my geeky mind, I felt like this great concept was not exploited properly. The beginning of the movie is very generic and predictable, and it takes ages for the movie to bring on the good ideas. There are a few scary scenes, but way too few, and for this reason the tension never truly picks up. One thing that disturbed me greatly was the age of the characters: father, daughter, aunt….they all seemed to have around the same age, stopping me for identifying myself to any of them, or getting attached to them.
Other than that, The Damned remains a decent movie, just one that could have been a lot better with more nightmarish scenes in it.
